Making Things Better Now
Remaking the neighborhood we know and love: Northwest Neighbors seek a vision to unite the energy and efforts of neighbors helping neighbors as we continue to recover from the Flood of 2008, mend our neighborhood, and renew it as a vital contributor to Cedar Rapids and Linn County.
Looking to the Future
Northwest Neighbors are helping rebuild the Time Check neighborhood in which lived people who from the beginning built Cedar Rapids in to the dynamic community it has become.
NWNNA and Time Check in the CR Building Community Newsletter
The following are excerpts from an article in the CR Building Community Newsletter, Volume 2, Issue 2, about the Time Check area, the Northwest Neighbors Neighborhood Association and some history of both.
In this month's Building Community Newsletter we spotlight the Northwest Neighbors Neighborhood Association (NWNNA) and the neighborhood's history. The area, also known as "Time Check" has a long history as a vibrant, close knit working class community. The name Time Check is said to come from the early days of the community when railroads, often short on payroll, would issue post-dated paychecks, or time checks, for workers which were honored by local banks. Located on the near Northwest side of Cedar Rapids between downtown and Ellis Park, the Northwest Neighborhood has nearly 3,000 residents. In 2008 the Northwest Neighborhood was one of the hardest hit by the flood, losing approximately 2,300 residents and 800 homes as a result of the flood...
...Linda Seger, the President of the NWNNA feels that the neighborhood is "becoming more and more diverse ethnically", and views this as a major asset to the neighborhood and the city as a whole. "Our strength as a City is our diversity". Historically the Northwest portion of town has been a working neighborhood, and one that has had a diverse culture...
...The spirit of resiliency was carried forward in 2008 when the flood struck. While being one of the most impacted of the neighborhoods in the City the people came together. According to Seger, the City, and this neighborhood "brought honor to the people of the Midwest... we were the epitome of the Midwest work ethic; to pull our lives forward, and get past the crisis". Today the NWNNA is an active and essential part of getting past the crisis, looking towards the future, while maintaining the heritage of the past.
